What is the Bartel Arts Trust?

The Bartel Arts Trust is an urban-based community art centre that is a venue and facility for skills training, promotion and exposure of disadvantaged and emergent artists. The focus of the centre is local arts, culture, crafts and entertainment that reflects the Zulu, Indian and Western heritage of KwaZulu-Natal. The difference at BAT is the grassroots, the experimental, the cross-arts trends and the innovation that is promoted at the centre.

Mission statement

To support the development of a vibrant artistic practice which celebrates our rich cultural diversity, and builds respect for artists and their role within society.

The BAT Centre as a complex consists of the following:

The Resource Centre - Information Centre Mission Control - Conference venue at the BAT Centre. Suitable for business workshops and conferences. Capacity - Seating - 70 and Training - 28.
Bayside Gallery - Showcase for contemporary South African ceramics, original fine art prints and other upmarket craft. Goods can be packed and exported to international destinations on request.
The BAT Shop - Offers a comprehensive selectionof African art and craft in particular from KwaZulu-Natal. The shop offers contemporary paintings, prints, sculptures and pottery. Perspektive - for alternative style. Perspektive is crammed full of interesting and well selected gift ideas from around the world. Expect to find New Age crystals, candles and dragons alongside traditional love beads, necklaces and artifacts.
MacBat - Harbour Apple Source. Authorised Apple Reseller. Apple Hardware and Software. Digital photographs, Laminating, Colour scanning, Ring binding and ID cards.
Funky's Restaurant and Bar - Funky's, Durban's popular restaurant and bar which combines local cuisine and music in a unique blend of entertainment. Catch live bands at the venue Thursdays through to Sundays. Bands range from jazz and rock to R&B and reggae. There is a nominal couvert charge.
Intensive care Café - Treat yourself to fine coffee and real Italian Ice cream. They serve coffee, tea, fruit juice, cans, milkshakes, cakes and biscuits.
OWN-KZN - Open Window Network - KwaZulu-Natal. OWN-KZN is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation committed to the development of community video and television initiatives in KwaZulu-Natal. They have set up Community News Programming Units. These units have been brought together to form Channel-C TV Network. Channel Community Television Network (referred to as Channel-C) is the name of a new and ambitious collective body consisting of community-based video production units (CNPUs) drawn from different communities. Ikhaya Lendlamu Trust - this is a trust where cultural dance is promoted. This is done by establishing contacts for the groups and also setting up workshops and other assistance for them.
